AI Job Displacements
Engish 9 Unit 5: Social Justice Research
Overview
AI Technology can lead to significant job displacements, so we need to implement policies to protect workers from these impacts.
Protecting Workers from AI Job Displacement
The important reasons for implementing policies to protect workers from Job displacement is the concern about the impact of AI on employment. According to an essay published through Arizona State University by Amanda Ballantyne, Jodi Forlizzi, and Crystal Weise associated with AFL- CIO, stated “including union perspectives in research and development is essential to building effective, equitable technology and public trust.” AI has already started to replace some jobs, with IBM being one of those notable companies where it is happening. After taking the worker’s input into account, IBM can address their concerns of those affected by these changes, which can make them feel more secure and included in their workplace.
Ethical Considerations in AI Advancement
The concerns of many people who are considering their career options are plenty, especially in areas with significant AI advancements. According to an academic journal published through National Library of Medicine by Ni Chen, Zhi Li and Bo Tang affiliated with the School of Public Policy and Administration at Chongqing University “70% of workers are worried about job displacement by AI, according to 2023 polling released by AFL-CIO.” This shows the fear among the majority of employees in their work regarding the impact of AI on their job security. It is unethical to lay off workers just because the company wants to advance in AI. So, it is better using AI to innovate and improve a workplace, while also making sure that your employees are being supported and motivated.
AI's Contribution to Industry and Economic Growth
On the other hand, according to an academic journal published through National Library of Medicine by Ni Chen, Zhi Li and Bo Tang affiliated with the School of Public Policy and Administration at Chongqing University China states "the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) has made enormous contributions to industrial and economic growth.” Clearly, it will contribute to the growth of the industry and economy although what they mean by this is that this kind of progress should be balanced with a motivated workforce. AI can definitely help industries and economies grow, but it is important to make sure that there is a balance. Using AI isn’t a bad thing or wrong thing but it needs to be done thoughtfully, and ethically. If workers are pushed into roles they don't want or aren't excited about, they won't be as effective.
Final Thoughts
While AI technology brings opportunities for innovation, it's important to consider its impact on jobs. By creating policies that protect workers and involve them in the process, we can find a balance between technological progress and job security. This approach not only supports employees but also contributes to the long-term success of businesses and society.I believe it's crucial for everyone; businesses, policymakers, and educational institutions—to work together to find sustainable solutions for integrating AI into the workplace. By forming task forces and collaborating on strategies, we can ensure that AI benefits everyone and sets a positive example for future generations.
